Casting the Novel (Senator Mendoza,Maria and Willum)

Senator Mendoza-Eric Roberts. *Note* no pages speak of the Senator’s appearance or character, this is based of generalizations.

Stereotypically, Senators are of middle age and dress sharply. Eric Roberts has always acted as a middle aged boss or a person with a significant amount of power. Senators are in a position of power and are stereotypically middle aged with thick gray hair and dress with the style of a wealthy gentlemen living in the 1930’s. Eric Roberts has experience acting as a man in power in movies such as the Expendables where he played a criminal lord. Eric Robert’s appearance and dressing style as well as acting style fits that of a wealthy Senator, he truly is the optimal actor to play the role of Senator Mendoza accurately.

Willum-Patrick Dempsey.

Chapter 4 Page #27-28 Willum operated on Matt. He removed the glass from his foot at well as gave his a tetanus shot

Chapter 5 Page #37 Willum and Rosa flirt, Willum smells Rosa's perfume and attempts to hug her before she wriggled out of his grasp.
Chapter 6 Page # 55- Willum denied that he knew of Matt’s living conditions before El Patron so he could undermine Rosa’s credibility. He wanted to do this because he knows how Rosa treats Matt and doesn’t appreciate her unneeded obsessive affection for him.

Willum, the family doctor is clever, kind and smart. His appearance is never described specifically in the book but using generalizations I chose Patrick Dempsey as the actor to play a subdued, clever doctor. Dempsey plays a doctor in the television show Gray’s Anatomy. Dempsey’s experience and style of playing a doctor would fit in with the role that was described to us through his words and actions. When Matt met El Patron, Willum was summoned to examine the boy. His condition was less than stellar and Rosa, as his caregiver took the blame. “Rose raked his face with her nails”. Rosa attacked him for denying he knew anything of the boy’s condition. After Rosa was removed from the room by two large bodyguards, he simply wiped the blood from his face with a handkerchief and carried through with his work without flinching. Willum, though he loved Rosa knew she had treated Matt badly and didn’t believe that was morally right. Rosa's once bright luster was lost when Willum came to the conclusion that the way she treated him was not only morally incorrect but also damaging to the clone of El Patron. Dempsey’s style of doctor is clever and subdued as well as calm. Much like the house doctor who stays calm in situations of trauma, such as removing glass from Matt’s foot, handling the immense pain of his face being raked by Rosa’s sharp nails and sacrifices his relationship chance with Rosa solely for the love of his profession. Willum is always ready to complete the task at hand and stays professional before is superiors. Patrick Dempsey’s calm and smart doctor persona would translate easily into an accurate portrayal of the Alcran household.

Maria- Mara Wilson.

Chapter 2- Maria meets Matt in his small home in the poppy fields

Chapter 4 Maria- Maria decides to spend the night with Matt not only to keep him company but because she also saw a new friend who wasn’t just a filthy clone.

Maria is a small girl of 6. She is always excited an energetic, like many children of her age group. Mara Wilson in her younger years played many young, curious energetic girls such as Susan in the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th street. Maria’s curiosity took the better of her when her and the children first met Matt in the poppy fields. She walked directly to the window Matt stared through and uttered “Hey boy. What’s your name? Do you want to play?”. Mara Wilson was truly meant for this role, Mara’s type of character who she plays exactly fits the personality of Maria. She isn’t shy, and like many in her age demographic, will speak her mind. Her character is also caring and understanding, much like Maria. She doesn’t see Matt as an animal but as a friend who’s different from all of the rest. She was the only person in the entire Alcran home who cared about Matt enough to spend the night with him and even sleep in the same bed as him. Mara Wilson’s young, innocent appearance also fits the impression that one gets from reading about a young, caring girl of 6 who has a big heart with enough room for anyone who she enjoys being around. Mara Wilson is the perfect incarnation of Maria Mendoza.
