El Patron's Playlist- Edward

(Edward) Dave Brubeck: Take Five

El Patron is an Older man, at chapter twenty he is one hundred and forty eight years of age (Farmer 20). Dave Brubeck take five is a classical upbeat Jazz song that fits the wealthy lifestyle of El Patron, I could easily picture El Patron playing this type of music at a concert or other place of leisure for him. During its height Jazz was highly popular with the rich population of the world, El Patron as Farmer has clearly
shown is an extremely wealthy man. El Patron cringes at the very thought of giving gifts to other people (18) and he hordes his massive amount of possessions in a vault underground. Not only his wealth but El Patron’s whole lifestyle is centered around his individualism and higher prowess, El Patron is a man of action and Take Five affirms his whole lifestyle. El Patron was not always a rich man, he struggled through poverty Take Five would be a very likely candidate for a song on El Patron’s iPod because in his old state he can appreciate his wealthy lifestyle and all that he has done to achieve it.

(Edward) Miles Davis: I could write a book

Once again a Jazz song in our play-list, Miles Davis is one of the most well known and significant Jazz artists to ever live. I could write a book is a highly up-beat jazz song, this song is not too heavy but very light and energetic. El Patron is now an older man (Farmer 20) at the age of 148 and just receiving a new heart to assist him in his work. El Patron could use some more excitement  in his life that is now ending. El Patron even finds himself no longer finding joy in his possessions (20). EL Patron desperately needs some motivation and fun in his life, we have seen this when EL Patron gains a massive amount of energy when Matt talks about giving things away. Deep inside El Patron is locked up and needs to be freed, take five will add some spice of life for El Patron.

(Edward) Paul Engeman- Push it to the Limit

This classic by Paul Engeman written for the movie Scarface is an absolutely perfect portrayal of El Patron. Push it to the limit is about not stopping till no more enemies can stand in your way. This is the very essence El Patron, he does not stop fighting ever and even if he passes away his massive impact on the world will live on. For instance when Matt is reading the novel on the History of Opium he reads all of El Patron’s accomplishments from forming an alliance with different countries to stopping a war between drug farms (Farmer 16). Even in El Patron’s frail state he is described as being an extremely dangerous man, many call him the old vampire (19). When Patron listens to a song like push it to the limit it reminds him self and all of his vast accomplishments and his ruthless drive. This song will never let Patron forget about his life and will never let him lose his eye of the tiger, when anyone listens to a song that inspires them is gives them a sense of nostalgia. El Patron now is an extremely aged man, listening to a song like push it to the limit renews the mans spirit and his killer instinct.

  1. Great selections Edward :)

Farmer really does focus on El Patron as driven and focused on success, I wonder if there is more to him than she is telling us?
